What Are Stair Rods And Why Do You Need Them?

At Handrails Direct, we're taking staircase interior design to the next level. (Although technically, in this case, we're taking things a few steps lower...) Add a touch of elegance to staircase projects with our brand-new stair rods, available in 3 finishes on our website right now. Unsure what stair rods are or why a customer would want them installed in their space? In this blog, we explain more...

What are stair rods?

Stair rods are designed for carpet runners, the strip of carpet that runs down the middle of the stairs, but leaves the sides of the staircase exposed. Carpet runners protect your staircase from wear, marks, and scratches, reduce noise from footsteps, and make your space look so much more elevated.

For tradespeople, stair rods can be a simple way to complete a runner installation with a professional-looking finish. Our stair rods can be cut to size, making it easier to achieve the right fit across different stair widths, and fixings are included, so you have what you need to get started. Available individually for smaller jobs, replacements or specific staircase sections, or in packs of 12 for a full stair runner installation. This gives you flexibility when ordering materials for different projects, helping you get the right quantity without over-ordering.

Why do you need stair rods?

Stair rods and carpet runners on a staircase can make a space feel much more premium. If you don't want fully carpeted stairs and would prefer to leave some of the timber staircase visible, a carpet runner can be a great option. A carpet runner can instantly make a staircase feel more luxurious by adding texture, softness, and a beautifully finished, considered look. Especially when paired with decorative stair rods.

Keep your handrail terminology in check:

  • Stair rods - The hardware that keeps the carpet runner in place
  • Carpet runner - A strip of carpet that runs down the middle of the stairs but leaves the sides of the staircase exposed
  • Spandrel - 'The closet under the stairs'. It's a small, triangular space under the stairs that usually provides a door to use for storage.
  • Finial - Decorative cap or orb on top of the newel post
