Small Changes, Big Impact: How to Refresh Your Staircase In a Weekend

Did you know, February is considered the month when we're most likely to organise, clean, and refresh our home, making it the perfect time to refresh your staircase? That's right! With it falling just after Christmas and right before the spring season, it's known as the 'in-between' month when many of us focus on what we can improve around the house. Redecorating and tidying a space can still be easy to do without requiring too much effort (and, more importantly, without a big price tag!).

Here's how to refresh your staircase and hallway in a weekend.

Refresh Your Staircase By Adding Greenery

A big trend set for 2026 is biophilic. Incorporating the outdoor aspects of our living space into the indoors, such as plants and wooden touches, can enhance the overall ambience. Whilst installing wooden panelling in your hallway is a bit of a big ask, adding a couple of house plants is a lot easier. House plants make a house feel calmer and more inviting, whilst their big green leaves trigger the part of the brain that causes relaxation, lowering stress and improving focus. We suggest a couple of hanging plants, maybe a large staple plant pot at the bottom of the stairs?

Install A New Handrail

Stay with us for this one; we can explain. We understand that this sounds like a LOT of effort just to get very few results at the end, but you're wrong. At Handrails Direct, our handrails are extremely easy to install, taking no longer than 30 minutes! Whether you're a DIY expert or just getting started, our kits come with exactly what you need to put your handrail up like a pro.

And even though it's just a piece of metal, the colour difference will certainly light your room up in new ways. We have 4 finish options at Handrails Direct: Kineton Matt Black, Edstone Matt White, Harbury Brushed Silver and Loxley Antique Brass. We suggest considering your wallpaper/wall paint colour and matching your handrail finish with it. Complimenting your walls and handrail nicely will really bring your space together and make it feel so much bigger.

Update Or Include A Stair Runner

A stair runner is a strip of carpet that runs down the centre of the staircase, leaving the edges of the stairs exposed. It provides traction, helping prevent someone from falling down the stairs, and reduces sound, especially if you have a noisy one at home that runs up and down the stairs! Additionally, a stair runner elongates the staircase, making it appear longer and taller. Great for creating additional space!

Are there any other staircase terminologies you're struggling with? Look at some of our definitions below:

  • Finial - Decorative cap or orb on top of the newel post.
  • Newel Post - Main support post at the start/end of the handrail, typically found on staircase handrails.
  • Spandrel - 'The closet under the stairs'. It's the small, triangular space under the stairs that usually has a door for storage.
  • Termination - End of the handrail that can be returned or capped.

Change Your Lightbulbs:

Maybe your staircase light is looking a bit dim? Can you see that light flickering as you get home from work? Now's the time to update and upgrade your home's lighting! There are so many different types of lighting that look great in your home. Let's get into it:

  • Natural - From the outdoors, bought inside through windows, doors and mirrors. We don't really recommend this for a hallway, during the evening and winter periods, your staircase will just be pitch black. (and dangerous)
  • General - Normal ceiling lighting that illuminates the entire room. Bright, clear and gets the job done.
  • Accent - Lighting used to show off a specific part of the house. Perhaps install accent lights along the bottom of your stairs to really light up the space?
  • LED - Switch out your normal white/golden lights for an LED glow. Lights that glow orange, green, red? It's a great statement piece.
  • Lamp Only - Ditch the main light and keep your staircase dimly lit. This is great for providing light that isn't too much and not in your face. Plus, it's the perfect excuse to go lamp shopping.

Add Mirrors To The Walls

Keeping with the theme of lights, mirrors help open a space and make it look brighter by allowing light from outside to bounce into the space. With the reflected room in the mirror too, your space will look larger, which is perfect, especially if your staircase can sometimes feel cramped. Typically, the staircase is right next to the front door, so having a mirror that you can check yourself out in just before you leave the house is a bonus.

Wall Art And Decoration

And finally, adding wall art to your staircase is a great way to introduce colour and personality to your walls. There are so many ideas for this: paintings, posters, mirrors, and family pictures. You name it!

As you can see, there are plenty of ways to refresh your staircase in a weekend. Make sure to look at our selection of finishes on our website. We've got so many different staircase types, which means no matter how your staircase looks, we've got a handrail waiting for you.
